Dr. Jay Nelson

Dr. Nelson’s journey to becoming a triple-board certified sleep dentist near Tampa began at Rutgers University, where he graduated summa cum laude. From there, he earned his DMD from the University of Pennsylvania. For more than two decades, he happily served those in his community with everything from essential checkups to tooth-saving restorative treatments. However, his passion for dental sleep medicine was ignited in 2009 during a continuing education course. He knew then and there that he wanted to dedicate his time and energy to helping patients get the restful, enjoyable night’s sleep they deserve. And the rest, as they say, is history!

Over the last decade, Dr. Nelson has earned a number of accolades. To start, he has completed more than 500 hours of continuing education on the topic of sleep medicine and has treated over 1,000 patients! He is also a diplomate of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine, The American Academy of Craniofacial Dental Sleep Medicine, and the American Board of Sleep & Breathing. Plus, he dedicates his time outside the office to this specialty as well, serving on the first facility fully accredited by the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine in the state of Florida.

With an extensive educational background and decades of hands-on experience, it’s not hard to see why patients near and far seek out Dr. Nelson. However, it’s important to note that his professional accomplishments are one part of what makes him truly unique. He is also dedicated to personalized, effective, comfortable care. That’s why he takes the time to get to know each patient on a one-on-one basis and offers a wide range of treatment options at his practice near Tampa. For him, helping patients with sleep apnea treatment, chronic snoring, and everything in between is personal, and you’ll see the difference it makes from your first appointment.

When he isn’t treating patients, Dr. Nelson enjoys spending time with his family. You’ll also find him attending concerts, traveling, and reading!

I initially came to Dr. Nelson to get a sleep apnea oral appliance. That experience was so pleasant and executed so well, that when I needed additional dental work, I decided to make Dr. Nelson my dentist permanently.

How Common Is Sleep Apnea?

Since the large majority of patients go undiagnosed, the exact number of cases is unknown. However, the American Sleep Apnea Association estimates that about 22 million Americans suffer from this common sleep disorder. So, if you’re exhibiting the symptoms associated with sleep apnea, don’t hesitate to get in touch with our team! From there, we can help you determine the root of the problem and restore your peaceful night’s sleep once more.

What Are the Common Symptoms of Sleep Apnea?

Unfortunately, many patients struggling with sleep apnea go months or years without a proper diagnosis. This is in part due to a lack of awareness about the common symptoms. With this in mind, keep an eye out for loud snoring, gasping for air in the middle of the night, morning headaches, daytime drowsiness, irritability, and difficulty concentrating.

What Will Happen If I Don’t Get Sleep Apnea Treatment?

If chronic snoring or daytime drowsiness doesn’t seem like a big deal, you may not make sleep apnea treatment a priority. However, if left untreated, you could end up experiencing serious health problems, like hypertension, stroke, heart failure, and heart attacks.

What Should I Do If I Think I Have Sleep Apnea?

If you think you have sleep apnea, then priority number one is to get in touch with our team. You can give us a call so we can learn more about your situation and help you schedule an appointment. After that, we can learn about your symptoms and concerns before helping you take the next steps to getting a diagnosis. From there, we can discuss your treatment options and create a custom treatment plan.
